The Broad Residency in Urban Education, a nationwide leadership development program, immediately places participants in full-time managerial positions in education organizations while providing professional development and networking opportunities.
Leadership Development Program Highlights
Job Placement with an Urban School District, Charter Management Organization (CMO), or Federal/State Department of Education. Residents work as managers reporting to the superintendent or a senior manager. Opportunities in general management as well as functional areas (HR, strategy, finance, operations, etc) are available nationwide.
$85,000 – $95,000 Salary. Residents are full-time employees of the hiring organization receiving full benefits and annual salaries between $85,000 – $95,000.
Networking Opportunities. Residents regularly meet and confer with other Residents, Alumni, Broad Center staff, as well as leaders in the private and social sector.
Not just a job, a career. Residents make immediate contributions to improving student achievement and operational excellence in their organization as they work their way to senior leadership posts.
What Residents Receive
Professional Development Sessions. Residents participate in eight professional development sessions at locations across the country. The sessions allow residents to develop their leadership competencies and their knowledge of urban education. The curriculum includes cases, site visits, lectures, expert panels, and interactive projects are utilized to ensure Residents understand the context of urban education as well as best practices in the private and public sectors.
Executive Coaching. Participants receive one-on-one executive coaching, 360 feedback and resident alumni advisor support. In addition, residents join a team of 4-5 peers to share best practices and provide support.
Alumni Services. To date, more than ninety percent of Broad Residency alumni have stayed in the education field. Residency graduates continue to receive career support and development opportunities from The Broad Residency alumni services team.
Selection Criteria
The Broad Residency considers candidates who have:
- An advanced degree (master’s degree or higher)
- A minimum of four years of work experience, exhibiting a track record of leadership and/or management
- Knowledge of one or more functional business areas (e.g., finance, operations, marketing, strategy, etc)
- Ability to manage complex political relationships and work well with a diverse set of communities, management styles, and personalities
- High level of energy, determination, and perseverance to act as a change agent in a demanding organization
- Superb analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
Passion for improving urban public education and a long-term commitment to K-12 education
2012 Selection Process Details and Timeline
Step 1:

Submit resume online beginning September 5, 2011. Resumes are reviewed on a rolling basis through February 20, 2012.
Applicants are encouraged to submit early. Selected candidates are advanced to the application stage. |
Step 2:
Submit an Application |
Applications are due by February 27, 2012 and are reviewed on rolling basis. Selected candidates are advanced to the 1st Round Phone Interview. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications well in advance of the deadline. |
Step 3:
1st Round Interview |
1st Round Phone and Skype interviews will be conducted for selected candidates who are advanced to the 1st Round.
Selected candidates are advanced to the 2nd round interview. |
Step 4:
2nd Round Interview |
Candidates attend one full day of interviews with The Broad Residency staff and alumni. The Broad Residency provides all travel and lodging. Candidates will interview on one of the following dates:
March 2 or 3, 2012 (Chicago)
March 16 or 17, 2012 (Los Angeles)
March 30 or 31, 2012 (Chicago) |
Step 5:
Final Interview |
The final interview is conducted by the hiring organization. It is an opportunity for candidates to meet with the organization to mutually assess fit.
These interviews occur between April 16 and May 11, 2012.

Step 6:
Join The Broad Residency |
In July, Broad Residents gather for the first session (Orientation) and meet and network with their Residency class.
Exact start dates are determined by the hiring organization, but generally occur July – August, 2012.
