Qualifications and Experience
Overview:
The person in this position acts as the cornerstone to the technical functioning of both the Hillman Center for Performing Arts professional series and the Shady Side Academy performing arts programs. He/she must be highly knowledgeable in all areas of technical theatre and dedicated to working with students.
Experience:
At least 5 years in theatre working as a technician. B.A. in Theatre or Technical Theatre with a focus on technical theatre. Knowledge of the following technical systems: SFX, QLab, CAD, Vector Works.
Major Responsibilities:
SOUND
- Maintain inventory of sound system equipment
- Set up and mix live musicians and bands, including multiple monitor mixes
- Determine sound needs of SSA, Hillman series, and rental events
- Coordinate the technical requirements for all audio and audio-visual recordings in the halls
- A/V duties: set up and troubleshoot video projections and cameras
LIGHTING
- Perform regular maintenance on lighting instruments, gels, and other materials in inventory
- Provide lighting design and implementation by hanging and focusing instruments, writing and recording cues for performances
- Maintain a house plot when halls are not used for specific performances
STAGECRAFT
- Provide scenic design and technical direction of the implementation, building, and rigging of sets for designated productions
- Provide rigging system maintenance and supervision/hands-on operation of counterweighted rigging systems
- Inventory and maintain all carpentry, rigging, and staging equipment
- Supervise and organize designated facilities, storage areas, and scene shop areas
- Schedule and supervise student theatre technicians
- Assign appropriate crew and responsibilities for each production
- Set up and run all SSA events and other third party events as scheduled by the Executive Director
- Attend production meetings with Theatre Director for SSA shows
OTHER
- Act as the main technical contact for production companies, artists, and production managers on assigned events
- Act as the liaison with rental groups who hire the hall to staff events as determined in consultation with the Executive Director
- Oversee equipment purchase, maintenance, recording of stock lists, and budget monitoring
- Attend load-ins, rehearsals, sound checks, concerts, and other performances for quality assurance
- Liaise with service departments to ensure health and safety, and to ensure that licensing and fire regulations are adhered to
- Train other staff members (trainees) and volunteer staff in most aspects of technical theatre
- Work with many different performers and maintain a positive, professional attitude
The successful candidate will have:
A proven track record of working in a multi-disciplinary arts venue and display an active interest and knowledge of the theatre, dance, and music industries
Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills as well as a meticulous attention to detail
An industrious work ethic
A high level of computer proficiency, including the MS Office suite
An ability to work independently, under pressure in a multi-task environment, and as a dynamic and supportive part of a team
A dedication to arts education and experience working with adolescents
Compensation
This is a salaried position. Candidate will receive full medical, dental and health, as well as a 401K and substantial vacation time. Salary will range from $30-50K, commensurate with experience.
